Part II. Knowing

Must you Chain me to Friendship

Shakespeare's Sonnet CXXXIII → Transbliterated (030)

Shakespeare

Beshrew that heart that makes my heart to groan
For that deep wound it gives my friend and me!
Is’t not enough to torture me alone,
But slave to slavery my sweet’st friend must be?
Me from myself thy cruel eye hath taken,
And my next self thou harder hast engross’d:
Of him, myself, and thee I am forsaken;
A torment thrice three-fold thus to be cross’d:
Prison my heart in thy steel bosom’s ward,
But then my friend’s heart let my poor heart bail;
Whoe’er keeps me, let my heart be his guard;
Thou canst not then use rigour in my jail:
    And yet thou wilt; for I, being pent in thee,
    Perforce am thine, and all that is in me.

Transbliteration

Fuck that heart
	That makes my heart moan
		Cut to its core
		By my best friend

Is it not enough to torture me?

Must you chain me to friendship
	And it's bitter eternity?

To look in your eyes
Is to be in a tornado of cruelty
	Myself by your side
	Engrossed in a spin of fate
		And him there
			Spiralling around us
Is to join my forsakers
	Doubly crossed
	Thrice tormented

My heart is kidnapped
	Taken to a neighborhood
		Near to yours
But those who would ransom me are poor
	Whosoever would deliver me
		Is already imprisoned

You could free me
	But you like me there
		So you can feel sorry for me
		Try to help me
			Perforce
				Own me

The poem tracks the sonnet closely, from the crude version of its curse through the threefold torment to the imprisoned heart owned by its captor, though it drops the plan to shield the friend and adds a captor who enjoys pitying the speaker. The Spanish supplied the tornado (tomado), the neighborhood (barrio) and the lover who likes him there (quieras).

The sonnet
The speaker curses the mistress for enslaving both him and his friend, and asks to be imprisoned in her so his heart can guard his friend's, knowing she will still be harsh because he is wholly hers.

the mistress → a cruel lover
Translation
adequacy 1.7 · fluency 1.1 · chrF 54. The complaint that one heart wounds both the speaker and his friend is clear at the start, and the final surrender survives. The prison-and-bail conceit that carries the sestet does not.

Where the translation failed

  • T6 “And my next self thou harder hast engross'd” → «Y tú mi auto al lado más duro has engross'd» The friend as the speaker's second self becomes a car beside him, with the verb left in English.
  • T12 “Thou canst not then use rigour in my jail” → «Tú que puedes, no utilice el rigor de mi cárcel» The logical point that the mistress cannot be harsh inside his heart becomes a confused plea.
  • T10 “But then my friend's heart let my poor heart bail” → «Pero entonces el corazón de mi amigo que mi pobre corazón libertad bajo fianza» The offer to stand bail for the friend's heart loses its verb and its logic.
